iPhone
Feature

Turn your lock screen into a rotating nature gallery that changes itself every single hour. No app. No download. It's already built into your phone.

The Walkthrough

Six taps to a lock screen that refreshes itself.

The feature is called Photo Shuffle. It pulls the nature photos out of your own camera roll — the beach shots, the bush walks, the sunsets you forgot you took — and cycles a new one onto your screen every hour.

1

Press and hold your lock screen

Wake your phone and unlock it with Face ID, but don't swipe up. Press and hold anywhere on the lock screen until the wallpaper gallery zooms out.

2

Tap the + button

It's the circle in the bottom-right corner. This creates a brand new lock screen rather than editing the one you already have.

3

Choose Photo Shuffle

It sits along the top row of wallpaper types, next to Photos and Emoji.

4

Select Nature — and deselect the rest

You'll see category bubbles: People, Pets, Nature, Cities. Tap Nature so it's the only one highlighted, then tap Use Featured Photos.

5

Set the frequency to Hourly

Tap the three dots in the bottom-right of the preview. Choose Hourly from the list. Your other options are On Tap, On Lock, and Daily.

6

Tap Add, then Set as Wallpaper Pair

That applies it to your lock screen and home screen together. Done — a new nature shot every hour, forever.

The bit everyone gets wrong: You hold the lock screen, not the home screen. And "Nature" isn't an album you scroll to find — it's a smart category your iPhone builds automatically from photos already in your library.
Troubleshooting

If it's not working.

Photo Shuffle fails for the same three reasons every time. Ninety seconds of troubleshooting and you'll be sorted.

The Nature category is empty or greyed out

Go to Settings → Photos and turn on Show Featured Content. Your iPhone can't sort your photos into categories while that's switched off.

It says "Processing" and never finishes

Large libraries take time to categorise. Plug your phone in, leave it locked overnight on Wi-Fi, and check again in the morning. It sorts itself out.

The photos it picks aren't the ones you want

Build an album called Nature in your Photos app with your own hand-picked shots, then at step 4 scroll past the category bubbles and choose that album instead. Full control, same result.

Make it yours

Go further.

Four ways to push this further and make it completely yours.

Prefer a surprise every time? Swap Hourly for On Lock and you'll get a fresh photo every time you pick up your phone.

Kill a photo you don't like. Open it in Photos, tap the three dots, and choose Don't Feature This Photo. It'll never appear again.

Lock screen only. At step 6, choose Customise instead of Set as Wallpaper Pair, then set your home screen separately.

Stack it. Make a second Photo Shuffle lock screen using Pets or Cities, then swipe between them by holding down the lock screen.
